Before we delve into this review I’ll have to catch you up to speed on my love of Helena Hunting books. I found Helena’s books, well the first book I read on accident—you can say my relationship with her stories started with our own meet cute. ;)
I had just downloaded Audible for book club and I was not good at navigating the app very well at first. I wasn’t sure what was up with the “credits” and halfheartedly skimmed through the app while looking for the next book that was selected for Lit Chicks. I didn’t see how I bought a few books accidentally and seeing as though we don’t repeat a genre we just read, kind of skewed my recommended section.
When I got home from our meeting, I saw a few books that were sitting in my library waiting for me to download. I almost spit out my drink when I saw none other than the perfect (shirtless) Alex Waters (er I mean the cover model) in my library section. More specifically the title, Pucked. I mean, I’ve been to maybe one or two hockey games in my life and what I remember was great nachos and how entertaining it was to see the guys getting into insane fights. Also, I love the cold so bundling up is always a plus for me. What really made me laugh was the title because I’m a big fan of puns and I had a good feeling about this author. Yay for gut feelings! If you didn’t catch on, Pucked is a sports romance.
Not knowing you can exchange books on Audible, I relented and downloaded Pucked since I was procrastinating on our book club pick. The first chapter had me HOOKED! First of all, Violet’s first scenes if I can recall were about how she was procrastinating reading her book club book. I felt like I was being punked to be honest. Basically, I fell in love with the characters she creates and how I can see myself in almost all of the heroines and heroes. If you haven’t read any of Helena’s work I definitely recommend starting there because Violet is the most outrageous, don’t take life to seriously, says what everyone is thinking type of person. So once you accept Violet you’ll see how well crafted all the other characters are.
You can say this was the first author where I binge read all of their work. I love how light hearted these stories are with characters who love wholeheartedly, with A TON of humor. Reading is definitely my escape so a good fun romance is perfect! Basically, Helena writes the best, most quirky characters with the best meet cutes. (Ahem, Lainey and Rook) Which brings me back to this book.
Meet Cute is the last book in my binge sadly, but I do feel like I’m ending on a high note! (Please speed write more Helena haha jk!)
Helena has a thing for naming her characters with some type of floral theme, and our heroine in this story is aptly named Kailyn Flowers. Literal flowers this time which made me laugh seeing as though I was trying to guess what type of flower the last character of my Hunting Binge would be.
Kailyn is a smart, driven woman who meets her childhood celebrity crush in law school. After she fan girls profusely and gives me secondhand embarrassment for her, she ends her college career with a falling out with her crush. When I say fan girled on him, I mean flailing arms, high pitched squeals and lots of spacing out. While I was squealing/squirming in my seat in a different way (secondhand embarrassment moment) I noted how great Holly Warren acted out this scene on Audible. So good!
Former child star Daxton Hughes is thriving at his career of being an entertainment lawyer when he gets reacquainted with his former college peer and opponent. We get to see them battle it out and work as a team while they fight their attraction to each other. They either have to learn to forgive each other or move on. There is also a big plot with familial themes that I cannot discuss without spoiling but loved.
I found myself excited with anticipation at the beginning of the story. I was definitely stressed out and sad for the characters separately. Then I found myself extremely happy with the ending. I’m usually not a stand-alone type of gal, but I can definitely appreciate this one. I love the family theme in this book and appreciate the time given to develop not only the romantic relationship between the main characters, but the relationships with the secondary characters. The conflict in the plot felt genuine too which is always a big plus.
Now that I’m caught up with all things Helena Hunting books, I will now have to wait with rest of the fan club or as they call themselves Helena’s Beaver Den. Want to know what that means? Do the Hunting Binge. ;)
